Beware of Scammers: HASiL's Guide to Staying Safe from Tax Fraud in Malaysia

Along with the government's desire to make Malaysia one of the top 20 countries in artificial intelligence (AI) technology, cases of fraud or scammers are also growing rapidly and becoming more sophisticated to the point of being difficult to detect. The Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (HASiL) is also not exempt from being linked to the fraud syndicate to the extent that the public is confused and deceived. This fraud syndicate uses the latest technological methods to deceive victims with various modus operandi. Although many arrests are made by the authorities and published in the mass media, cases of scammers still occur and the number of cases increases every year.

In this regard, HASiL would like to remind the public to be cautious of any form of suspicious emails, links and phone calls regarding tax issues as well as the Government's Special Assistance. The public is advised not to fill in or provide any personal information on suspicious websites/links or phone calls so that such personal data is not misused by irresponsible parties.

A series of reminder announcements have also been issued by HASiL through media statements, tax awareness videos and infographics related to scammer scam syndicates from time to time. Therefore, the public is advised to check any information related to taxation through the following authentic channels:

    i. HASIL official portal at www.hasil.gov.my;
    ii. MyTax Portal in https://mytax.hasil.gov.my;
    iii. HASiL Contact Centre (HCC) at 03- 8911 1000; and
    iv. Visit the nearest HASiL office.

HASiL also welcomes cooperation from the public to channel any information related to scammer activities or report to the authorities so that swift action can be taken to curb this matter. As an additional information, HASiL is bound by the tax information confidentiality provisions under Section 138 of the Income Tax Act (ACP) 1967 whereby any personal information of the taxpayer will not be disclosed to a third party arbitrarily.
